Supplements

I’m a compliant patient when it comes to treating my disease with conventional medicine but I also believe that when taken additionally, supplements can also boost overall health. I’ve tried many different supplements over the years and here are the ones that I currently find beneficial.

Saline Sinus Rinse

PharmaNAC-900mg fizzy tabs-2 per day-dissolved in 2-4 oz of water. N-acetylcysteine is an essential precursor used by the body to produce glutathione. Glutathione is a naturally occurring antioxidant that helps maintain the immune system. Scientific evidence suggests CF patients have reduced levels of glutathione in their lungs. I’ve been taking this since 2011.

Magnesium-500 mg per day. Magnesium is one of the most important minerals in the body. It helps to maintain normal nerve and muscle function, supports a healthy immune system, keeps the heart beat steady, and helps bones remain strong. It also helps regulate blood glucose levels and aid in the production of energy and protein. Research suggests that oral magnesium supplementation helps improve respiratory muscle strength.

Vitamin D3-3000 IU per day. People with CF don’t easily absorb Vitamin D from foods. Vitamin D plays an extremely important role in bone health. To maintain normal Vitamin D levels, sometimes we need Vitamin D supplementation. In the winter months, my doctor suggests I take 3000iu instead of the 2000iu that I take in the summer.

Acidophilus– Acidophilus is a bacteria that exists naturally in the body. It helps maintain an acidic environment in the body, which can prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. I take this probiotic consistently when I’m on antibiotics because it helps to prevent some of the unpleasant side effects that usually accompany antibiotic use.

ADEK Vitamin

Curcumin-1000mg per day.  Curcumin has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant. I take 500mg twice a day. Because it’s fat soluble I drink golden milk. I pour the contents of the capsule into 1/4 cup of hot milk with 1/2 tsp of coconut oil.

Fish Oil-1000-1200mg

Chia seeds-These little seeds are among the healthiest foods on the planet. They are loaded with nutrients. You should just google it but there are so many reasons why these should be consumed. Chia seeds have fiber, protein, fat (omega-3s), calcium, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, niacin, potassium. I have at least 1 tbsp with my breakfast.

Indrepta-This comes in capsule form and is a dietary supplement designed to promote lung health.

    Sooo interesting!

  2. IMHO you made very good choices with your supplements. Hope you are at the Stanford dose for NAC, 900 mg three times per day. Clinical trials showed this dose stopped disease progression in the treatment group over the duration of the trial. The control group declined. Excited to hear how Indrepta works for you. It has curcumin in it, so that’s something you would not need to continue to buy.
